History

Gaspar de Portola, governor of Baja California, first led an expedition through the area in 1669. In 1875, the McKinnon family settled along the shores of a lagoon in the area that eventually became known as Cardiff-by-the-Sea. In 1881, Jabaz Pitcher purchased other acreage atop a plateau in the area. The arrival of the railroad stimulated development of the region in the late 19th century.
